Travel insurance - Tips & Advice - Understanding travel insurance
The last 30 years have seen the world open up for travel, as more countries welcome tourists, and transport options increase and become more widely available. Direct Line can bring you fantastic cover at the right price so wherever you want to travel – be it Timbuktu or Tipperary – you will be able to get worldwide travel insurance cover quickly and easily, whatever your needs.
Wherever you are thinking of going in the world, worldwide travel insurance should be a high priority on your to-do list. If you’ve saved up for that one-off trip, then Direct Line’s Single Trip Travel Insurance may be the policy for you. It’s valid for trips of up to 90 days (if you’re aged over 60, the maximum single trip is 42 days), so is also ideal if you’re visiting one country – either in Europe or worldwide. Seasoned globetrotters would probably benefit more from an Annual Multi Trip policy, as this would save you from the time needed to organise several policies a year and likely be cheaper overall. This allows you to travel for up to 42 days on a single trip, to a total of 120 days a year, on as many trips as you like. It’s also ideal if you fancy a few weekend breaks, plus a longer winter or summer break. If you cover the whole family on the same Annual Multi Trip Travel Insurance policy, you could all simultaneously travel to different corners of the world, fully covered, so long as you are travelling to specified areas.
When it comes to worldwide travel, a world tour or gap-year break may spring into many people’s minds. If you want to travel to a variety of different countries (be it by cycle, boat, plane or train) or make the most of an extended stay, you would benefit most from Direct Line’s Discoverer Travel Insurance policy, which provides European cover for journeys of up to 365 days and Worldwide travel insurance cover of up to 550 days.
Whichever Direct Line Travel Insurance you choose, you need to specify your geographical area of travel, which is then included on your policy. Under the terms and conditions of all Direct Line Travel Insurance policies, there are some countries that are excluded – generally those destinations to which travel is advised against by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO). World events can change matters in an instant (big natural disasters and war zones will affect where you can travel) so you should check the list of countries online at www.fco.gov.uk before you book your ticket and your worldwide travel insurance. If you have already booked your particular holiday and your relevant insurance and something of this nature should happen, make sure you call us to advise us of your plan and further options can be discussed.
Where you travel in the world can also affect what you do when you get there. If you travel to Australia, you may want to try diving, for example. If you go to Kenya, you might decide to incorporate a safari. Direct Line Travel Insurance acknowledges the growing demand to ‘get active’ while on holiday or even on a business trip. For details of covered activities you can try while away, for instance white water rafting or scuba diving, simply check out our online policy documents. You’ll also see we offer optional winter sports cover for those who want to practise their on-piste moves, wherever they might be in the world.
Getting help in an emergency and making a claim is also easy. We have a range of international numbers and helplines from which we are more than happy to give you assistance.
If you’re planning on stepping out into the world this year, make sure you don’t leave without your Direct Line Travel Insurance. You can get a quote and buy online today.
