Pet insurance - Tips & Advice - Understanding pet insurance

At Direct Line we care about the welfare of your cats and dogs and can help you do the same with our range of flexible pet insurance options.

Our UK pet insurance covers pet cats and pet dogs, excluding working animals and dangerous dogs. For a definition of these terms you can check out our pet insurance policy documents online. Your pets must be in good health on the start date of insurance, aged between eight weeks and up to nine years (up to six years for some breeds) and must reside in the UK.

If your pet meets these requirements then we hope to provide you with the pet cover you need. We’ve designed our pet insurance so that it is flexible enough for your specific needs. Vets’ fees are automatically included – although you can select the level of vet fees cover you need. Our Essential policy covers vets’ fees for a maximum of 12 months’ treatment for each illness, injury or disease, up to £4,000 per condition. Our Advanced policy covers vets’ fees up to £6,000 (per condition), with no time limit on reaching this amount. Our three helplines, Vet Helpline, Pet Bereavement and Legal Advice, are included whatever level of cover you choose.

You and your pet can also benefit from additional cover options that you can add on to your Essential or Advanced policy. These benefits include advertising and reward costs if your pet strays, or if you have a lost or stolen pet (up to £500); reimbursement if you lose your pet through theft, straying or death due to accidental injury (up to £1,500); pet boarding costs if you have to go into hospital for more than four days in a row (up to £500); and holiday cancellation cover due to loss, illness or injury of your pet (up to £1,000). We also offer third party liability. This covers legal liability should your dog cause injury to another person or cause damage to their property (up to £1 million).

Because we also know that sometimes you want or need to take your cats or dogs with you out of the UK, our pet insurance can also include overseas travel cover. This extends your usual cover to include trips to countries that are part of the Government’s Pet Travel Scheme. It covers things such as quarantine costs, loss of pet passport, repeat tick and worming treatment and emergency expenses while abroad.
