Home insurance - Tips & Advice - About Direct Line home insurance

Q. Is my computer covered?
A. Yes, our Contents policy automatically provides cover for home computers, including accidental damage protection. If you have a laptop computer and require protection outside the home, you will need to take out our Personal Possessions cover (an optional add-on under our Direct Line Home Insurance policy or included as standard when you take our Contents cover under our Direct Line Home Insurance Plus policy). This will cover your laptop against theft, loss or accidental damage anywhere in the World (for up to 60 days abroad under our Direct Line Home Insurance policy).

Please call us for a quote if the replacement value of your laptop exceeds £2,000 (Direct Line Home Insurance) or £3,000 (Direct Line Home Insurance Plus).

Q. Does my Contents Insurance cover bicycle theft?
A. If the bicycle is stolen from your home (including garages and outbuildings), then it is covered under our Contents insurance policies.

However, if the bicycle is stolen away from the home, it will only be covered if our optional Pedal Cycle cover has been purchased (under the Direct Line Home Insurance policy) or if you have Personal Possessions cover for up to £1,000 per cycle (included automatically if you buy Contents cover under our Direct Line Home Insurance Plus). These covers safeguard your bicycle and its accessories. Read more about our bicycle cover or call us on 0845 878 8703 for further information.

Q. Are my belongings covered outside the home or when I go on holiday?

A. Not unless you have taken out our Personal Possessions cover. This cover is an optional add-on to our Direct Line Home Insurance policy and is automatically included when you take out Contents insurance under our Direct Line Home Insurance Plus policy.

Under our Direct Line Home Insurance policy, our Personal Possessions option covers your personal belongings (including money up to £500 and credit cards up to £500) against theft, loss or accidental damage anywhere in the British Isles. Overseas travel cover is included for up to 60 days abroad each year. Any individual items worth more than £2,000 will need to be specified on the policy.

Under our Direct Line Home Insurance Plus policy, the Personal Possessions section covers your personal belongings (including money up to £1,000, credit cards up to £5,000 and cycles up to £1,000 each) against theft, loss or accidental damage anywhere in the world. Any individual items worth more than £3,000 will need to be specified on the policy.

Q. Can I arrange cover just for my personal items?

A. We are currently unable to offer Personal Possessions cover as a standalone product – this can only be purchased as add on to Home Contents Insurance.

Personal Possessions insurance covers items that are designed to be worn or carried away from the home.

Q. Do you give a no-claims discount on home insurance?
A.
You may be entitled to a no claims discount on your Direct Line home insurance – please check the terms and conditions in your policy documents.

Q. Will my Buildings Insurance cover my outbuildings, such as the garage and shed?
A. Yes. All domestic garages, outbuildings, sheds, extensions and conservatories fall under the definition of Buildings and are covered under the Buildings insurance section.
